When you open the FAAC control box, you’ll find a metal nameplate with the model and serial. Write it down before you call us. Better yet, take a photo of the mounting area where the operator arm meets the gate. We can tell a lot from that picture: whether the bracket is original, whether it was shimmed improperly at install, whether the gate leaf has been welded before. California’s dry heat spares our steel from heavy rust, but it does not spare the thinner brackets and pinch points from fatigue. Signs Your FAAC Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate sags at the free end. Hinge welds or hinge plates have loosened or cracked. The FAAC motor keeps trying to close a gate that’s now dragging on the ground or the strike plate. You’ll hear the motor strain, and the leaf will bounce back on the final inch.
• Visible cracks in the metal near the operator arm. This is the most common failure point on a FAAC swing system. Repeated push-pull stress at the attachment bracket eventually fatigues the steel. Look for hairline cracks radiating from bolt holes. If you see rust staining along a crack line, the metal has been failing for months.
• The gate shudders or jerks mid-travel. A bent or twisted gate frame binds against the hinge line. The motor hesitates, then lurches. It looks like an electrical problem, but it’s almost always a mechanical one.
• Bolts keep loosening, no matter how often you tighten them. When the holes in the mounting plate have elongated or wallowed out, the bolts have nothing to grip. Re-tightening is just buying weeks. The plate needs to be replaced, not re-bolted.
• The gate is noisy in a way it wasn’t before. A squeal, low groan, or metal-on-metal scrape usually means two surfaces are rubbing that were never meant to touch. That’s the sound of a weld or bracket losing its hold, and the noise will only get worse.

A gate leaf under tension is dangerous to weld in place. If it shifts while the weld is cooling, you can end up with a worse bind than you started with, plus a burn scar in the driveway.

The other common DIY miss is welding a bracket to the post while the gate is still attached. Heat travels.
